Good Vibrations Music Festival 2011
Kicking off the start of festival season this week and crossing another one off my list!  Good Vibrations in Melbourne, Australia has a pretty eclectic lineup but there are some gems that I am looking forward to seeing.  Topping my list are Bag Raiders, Erykah Badu, Fake Blood, and Fenech-Soler.  Bummed that Janelle Monae backed out though because I was really looking forward to seeing her.  I've seen Phoenix twice before (Almost Acoustic Christmas '09, Coachella '10) and Miike Snow thrice before (Coachella '10, Music Box '10, Treasure Island '10), but I would definitely see them again.  Can't wait to take my dancing shoes to the land down under and get my boogie on!

Better Than the Superbowl

Cat Power @ the Music Box 02.06.11
There are times when a certain song or artist stirs up such fond memories that I can't help but be nostalgic. Cat Power is one of those artists that has this effect on me.  Every time I hear her voice I am instantly transported to my first night in Kyoto, Japan with my dear friend Dan.  Cat Power was the soothing voice in a foreign, wildly beautiful city and it ended up being our soundtrack of the trip. Other memories include being attacked by a herd of licking deer, giant Buddha statues, painted geisha, beautiful bamboo forests, and our silly cart runner/driver.

Needless to say, I was super excited to get the opportunity to see Cat Power at the Music Box the other night. Her voice is sultry and airy at the same time, with a lot of soul and a little bit of blues mixed in. It was a super mellow set, but she looked and sounded lovely.  She passed out long stem pink roses at one point and it reminded me of Al Green, who passed out long stem red roses when I saw him at The Greek Theater.  I didn't pay close attention to the song choices because I was lost in thoughts about Japan...I miss  my friend Dan and hope our paths cross again soon.

The Night I Saw Andy Dick

Foster the People @ the Echo 01.26.11

Finally made it to see Foster the People on Wednesday at their last night of residency at the Echo. Apparently everybody else had the same idea because the 200+ line wrapped around the block. Insanity.

Their summery Pumped Up Kicks song popped onto my radar recently, but I was unfamiliar with anything else they've done. I originally thought that there was a male and female singer, but it turns out that the lead singer has an amazing ability to change his voice into a higher range that simulates a female's voice. As for their sound, I would say that Foster the People are the lovechild of MGMT and Peter Bjorn & John  They have enormous stage energy and they're going to blow up after they make their desert debut at Coachella this year.  I highly suggest trying to see them Sunday April 17th if you were able to successfully obtain a ticket.

Peer Pressure

RAC @ the House of Blues Sunset 01/19/11

Found energy in a can of rockstar for a last minute rendezvous to see RAC. Totally caved under the repeated requests to make a play last night and I am currently paying for burning the candle at both ends. Also in attendance: Vividid, BetaTraXx, and Charles I.

Pretty decent set in an intimate venue with no real surprises. To be honest I couldn't tell if their set was live or not, but then again I was grooving super hard. I sort of lost it when their remix of The Temper Trap's Sweet Disposition dropped. Love.
